Laura Robson is out of the Australian Open after being beaten in straight sets by American Sloane Stephens.

The 18-year-old Briton went down to her fellow teenage rival 7-5 6-3 as she struggled with a shoulder strain throughout the match.

Robson's path to the third round was hard-fought as she beat 2011 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in the previous round, triumphing 11-9 in an exhausting final set.

But she never recovered from a poor start against world No. 25 Stephens. Her opponent took a four-game lead in the first set but Robson levelled matters only to have her serve broken to lose the set.

Robson had two break points when 5-3 down in the second set but failed to convert them and when the opportunity came for Stephens to seal the match, she took her chance.

The American, 19, will now face Bojana Jovanovski, who beat Kimiko Date-Krumm, in the fourth round.
