Rafael Nadal survived a real scare before beating Carlos Berlocq 3-6 6-4 6-4 in the quarter-finals of the Brasil Open 2013 on Friday evening in Sao Paulo.

After rallying to level the contest by taking the second set, Nadal found himself a break down in the third. But with defeat staring him in the face, the former world No. 1 found his stride to complete victory in two hours and 24 minutes

Nadal's semi-final opponent is lucky loser Martin Alund. The world No. 111 saw off Jeremy Chardy in the second round and continued his dream run by beating Filippo Volandri 7-5 7-6(5) to reach the last four.

Nicolas Almagro's bid for a hat-trick of wins in the event is over as he was beaten 7-6(5) 3-6 7-6(3) by David Nalbandian.

Simone Bolelli completed the four semi-finalists with a 6-4 6-4 victory over Spain's Albert Montanes.
