Kim Clijsters is facing a race against time to be fit for the French Open after being ruled out for up to six weeks with a torn muscle in her foot.

Clijsters, the US Open champion, suffered the injury in her left foot during a Fed Cup singles match against Estonia and must now undergo intensive treatment to give her any chance of playing at Roland Garros.

For the first few days Clijsters will be on crutches and it is unclear when she will be able to resume full training. The French Open begins on May 23, giving the world No. 11 four weeks to recover.

The 26-year-old, who last year became the first unranked player and wildcard to win at Flushing Meadows, beat Maret Ani 6-4 6-2 on Saturday but she was later forced to withdraw from Sunday's second match - paving the way for Justine Henin to replace her against Kaja Kanepi.

The former world No. 1 broke her finger in practice last week and was set to miss the entire tie, but she made herself available following Clijsters' own injury.
