Jankovic wins first title in three years

Jelena Jankovic showed no effects of her gruelling route to the final of the Copa Claro Colsanitas as she swept aside Paula Ormaechea to take her first WTA title in three years.

The Serbian 27-year-old last lifted a Tour trophy in Indian Wells in 2010 and had lost all five of her finals in the intervening period.

Although the final was a straight-forward affair which Jankovic won 6-1 6-2 she had had to go through the mill to earn her place in it.

Against Julia Cohen in the first round the No. 1 seed took three hours to dispose of her American rival and and she needed a third set tiebreaker to beat Karin Knapp in the semi-finals.

Jankovic is a former world No. 1, although she has never won a grand slam singles title, and was clearly delighted at ending a tournament with the top prize once again.

"I had a wonderful week here," Jankovic said. "It's been an amazing experience. I'm so happy I was able to come here to Bogota for the first time and winning my 13th WTA title here makes the experience even better."

"I want to congratulate Paula for such a great tournament this week, playing so well and beating such good players. I'm sorry I had to beat you, Paula. But I think you're playing really good tennis and I wish you the best of luck for the rest of the upcoming season."

Marina Erakovic became the first New Zealander since 1989 to win a WTA title on Saturday by lifting the US National Indoor Tennis Championship in Memphis.

Yet Erakovic, who was born in Croatia, was denied winning the match entirely on her own merits as her opponent Sabine Lisicki retired in the second set.

Third seed Lisicki lost the first set 6-1 but had been battling an undisclosed illness for several days.
