Anne Keothavong suffered disappointment on Tuesday, as she was beaten by Kristina Mladenovic in the opening round of the Brazil Cup.

Keothavong, the current world No. 183, put in a valiant effort against the Frenchwoman - but was ultimately unable to win the crucial points as the world No. 58 eventually completed a 6-3 6-4 victory.

The Brit's serve was her undoing, a first serve percentage of just 44 per cent ultimately seeing her broken five times during the course of the match. The 29-year-old has now won just one WTA match since last year's Wimbledon.

Elsewhere, top seed Venus Williams eased into the second round with a composed 6-3 6-3 victory over Croatia's Mirjana Lucic-Baroni.
