Rafael Nadal booked his place in the semi-finals of the Mexico Open with a straight-sets win over Leonardo Mayer.

The world No. 5's form is on an upward curve following his return from injury and he came through a stiff second-set test from Mayer to win 6-1 7-5.

The first set suggested a one-sided romp as Nadal was strong on serve and attacked Mayer at every opportunity. The Argentine responded to make Nadal work in the second set, but the Spaniard kept up the serving momentum and a solitary break in the 12th game when Mayer threw a forehand over the baseline was enough to take him through.

Up next for Nadal will be a serious test, as Nicolas Almagro powered down 10 aces in his 6-3 6-4 win over Horacio Zeballos.

Three-time defending champion David Ferrer looked in ominous form as he crushed Paolo Lorenzi 6-3 6-1 and he will face Fabio Fognini following his battling win over Santiago Giraldo.
