Maria Sharapova looked in ominous form as she powered into the third round at Indian Wells on Friday, beating former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone in straight sets.

Sharapova is targeting a 28th career title this week, and she allowed Schiavone no time at all to settle in a 6-2 6-1 triumph that lasted 62 minutes.

The Russian, who had never previously lost to Schiavone, will now meet 25th seed Carla Suarez Navarro in round three.

Also successful on Friday was No. 5 seed Petra Kvitova, who overcame Olga Govortsova. Victory was not without a big scare for Kvitova though, who lost momentum midway through the match in a 6-4 3-6 6-3 triumph.

Third seed Agnieszka Radwanska had no such issues against wildcard Maria Sanchez, winning 6-2 6-1.

But former world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic is out after a crazy encounter with Svetlana Kuznetsova. Jankovic bagelled her opponent in the first set but eventually lost 0-6 6-2 7-5.
