Sixth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga enjoyed a relatively straightforward passage into the third round of the Sony Open on Saturday, as he defeated Viktor Troicki in straight sets.

After coming through a hard-fought tiebreak to clinch the opening stanza, the Frenchman seemed to find his groove - eventually claiming a 7-6(6) 6-3 success.

Tsonga looked to be on course to claim the opening set with ease when he opened up a 5-1 lead in the breaker, but Troicki claimed the next five points in succession to grab a set point of his own.

Tsonga fended that off with a booming ace and, after Troicki fluffed a drop shot, moved into the ascendancy two points later.

The Frenchman then broke at the first opportunity in the second set, and it was that advantage he would ride to a relatively comfortable victory.

Tsonga will now face Jarkko Nieminen in the third round, after the Finn defeated 27th seed Martin Klizan in comprehensive fashion.

Thing were less comfortable for fourth seed Tomas Berdych, who needed over two hours to beat Daniel Gimeno-Traver. The Czech lost the first set before triumphing 5-7 7-6(3) 6-2.

Elsewhere, there were wins for eighth seed Richard Gasquet and 17th seed Sam Querrey, while David Goffin needed three sets to defeat Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Other seeds to advance included Andreas Seppi, John Isner, Marin Cilic, Milos Raonic and Mikhail Youzhny.
