Ankle injury a concern for Djokovic

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic admits he is worried about the ankle injury he suffered during Serbia's Davis Cup victory over USA.

The 25-year-old guided his country into the semi-finals of the competition after defeating Sam Querrey in four sets. However, he twisted his ankle during a rally in the opening set and, despite battling on, broke down in tears as he revealed he put his country first ahead of the injury.

"If I had not been playing for Serbia with my team beside me, I am not sure I would have carried on," Djokovic said. "It couldn't have happened at a worse moment, right at the start of the match. I felt pain with every motion in the first 30 minutes so I just had to go for precision with my shots.

"These are rare occasions when you get to play for your country with 15 people on your team cheering you on so it's always a big responsibility."

With the third ATP Masters 1000 event of the season kicking off next Sunday in Monte-Carlo, Djokovic faces an anxious wait to see if he will be fully fit for the clay court swing leading up to the French Open at the end of May.

"Injuries are part of the sport and you try to avoid them as an athlete as much as you can. The nature of the injury is still to be determined. All I can say is it doesn't look good. It's swollen, and when it's swollen it's definitely not a good first sign," Djokovic added.
