British No. 3 Anne Keothavong missed out on a place in the semi-finals at the Grand Prix de SAR after a 7-5 6-2 defeat to France's Alize Cornet.

Cornet, who was ranked 11th in the world last year but currently sits at 84, started in powerful fashion and built up a 4-1 lead over the Briton.

Keothavong responded superbly and reeled off four games in a row to serve for the opening set, but a series of tentative second-serves allowed her opponent to break back before winning the first set.

The Londoner, who is knocking on the door of a return to the top 100, created five break points in the second set but only managed to convert one as she eventually slumped to a disappointing defeat after one hour and 48 minutes.
