Defending champion Rafael Nadal will have to wait to play his third round match with Benoit Paire after play was suspended for the day following heavy rain in Barcelona.

World No. 5 Nadal will now meet the Frenchman on Friday as only three of Thursday's scheduled matches were able to be completed before the rain began to fall.

Juan Monaco moved into the last eight with a 6-0 7-6(11) win over Jeremy Chardy. It looked plain sailing as Monaco breezed through the opening set, but Chardy improved in the second and Monaco had to save a string of break points but eventually edged over the line after a marathon tiebreak.

Up next for Monaco is a clash with Nicolas Almagro who produced some fine play to see off fellow Spaniard Marcel Granollers 6-3 6-4.

Dmitry Tursunov failed to back up his shock win over No. 1 seed David Ferrer as he fell 4-6 6-1 6-3 to Thomaz Bellucci.
