Internacional striker Leandro Damiao is likely to join Tottenham within the next year according to the club's president Giovanni Luigi.

A move to Serie A side Napoli has also been mooted, but Spurs look set to win the race for the 23-year-old Brazil international's signature in one of the upcoming transfer windows.

Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas is a keen admirer of Damiao, who is part of an exciting new generation of attacking players for the selecao alongside Neymar, Oscar and Lucas Moura. The Premier League side were reportedly close to a deal for his signature following the London Olympics but a move never materialised.

Spurs then tried to resurrect the deal last January, but were it too late to make the move happen on deadline day.

Luigi has claimed a deal to take Damiao to England is not dead but has urged Tottenham officials to deal with him directly rather than going through representatives.

"If a club want a player, they must talk to the president of the club at which that particular player plays, and not just deal with the agent - that is not correct behaviour," Luigi told Tutto Mercato.

"Recently we talked with Tottenham, Leandro is very likely to play games in England in the coming year. On the other hand we can exclude Napoli."
