Ferrer flies into Portugal Open final

David Ferrer is into the final of the Portugal Open after the Spaniard defeated Andreas Seppi 6-1 6-4.

The world No. 4 will attempt to add to his two triumphs this season in Buenos Aires and Auckland on Sunday against Stanislas Wawrinka, who reached the final with a 6-3 3-6 6-1 victory over Pablo Carreno-Busta.

Ferrer is determined to keep hold of fourth spot in the world rankings for the French Open, and after organisers of the grand slam confirmed record seven-time champion Rafael Nadal will not be seeded higher than his ranking of fifth, it would mean Nadal will face one of the big three - Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer or Andy Murray - in the quarter-finals if Ferrer remains fourth.

Ferrer arrived to the semi-final tie against Seppi with a 4-0 head-to-head record. The 31-year-old also had not dropped a set to the Italian, and with such a dominant record Ferrer raced to the opening set with ease.

Seppi put up a fight in the second, but Ferrer broke serve and consolidated the advantage in the eighth game. Seppi could only apply pressure with a service hold in the ninth, and Ferrer closed out the victory to seal his place in his fifth final of 2013.

Swiss No. 2 Wawrinka will look to collect his fourth career title against Ferrer in the final, and the second seed is out for revenge after he was beaten by the Spaniard in the Buenos Aires final in February.
