Laura Robson is out of the Rome Masters after the British No. 1 suffered a 6-2 6-2 to Serena Williams.

Robson made it through to the second round on the back of a fine victory over former world No. 1 Venus Williams on Monday.

However, against the current top-ranked player, Robson could not repeat the feat against the younger Williams sister Serena.

Williams - who won the 50th WTA title of her career on Sunday against Maria Sharapova at the Madrid Open - was not at her best but was aided by the inconsistency of Robson, who at times in the match showed flashes of brilliance to pressurise the American.

With struggles on her serve over the past few months, Robson faced more woes against the American and hit eight double faults across the encounter which lasted an hour and 15 minutes.

Robson made an encouraging start as a fine forehand cross-court winner set up two break points. Williams saved them, but was unable to prevent the Briton from securing the break.

Robson could not make the advantage count as Williams broke back immediately and made it four consecutive games to move 4-1 in front. A love service game enabled Robson to reduce the deficit, but Williams clinched the opening set in 35 minutes.

The first five games of the second set went with the server as Robson kept with Williams. But, that was as good as it got for the 19-year-old as Williams broke in the sixth game to go on and reach the third round.

Former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki was sent packing as the Dane slipped up 6-2 4-6 6-7(5) to Bojana Jovanovski.

Petra Kvitova, the 2011 Wimbledon champion, defeated Sabine Lisicki 6-4 0-6 7-5, but world No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska crashed out after losing 7-6(2) 1-6 2-6 to qualifier Simona Halep.
