Djokovic claims players lack enthusiasm

After his second round victory over Guido Pella on Thursday, world No. 1 Novak Djokovic responded to Ernests Gulbis' comments about the top four in the men's game being "boring".

"There is always something you can find and say, 'Okay, that's something that should be different'," Djokovic said. "But I agree with one small fact, that maybe we are lacking more enthusiasm and maybe more entertainment in the players, so more creativity.

"But on the other hand, if you think from other perspective, it's tough because it's such a demanding sport now physically, mentally, emotionally. Every day you're basically on the court throughout the whole year. The season is very long [and] there is not much free time to think, 'Okay, I can do something else or whatever."

Victoria Azarenka may be behind Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova in terms of favourites for the event, but the Belarusian after her win over Annika Beck said: "In terms of winning Roland Garros, I always take it step-by-step, a match at a time. But if I didn't believe in it, I wouldn't be sitting here."

Bethanie Mattek-Sands stunned former champion Li Na, and the American revelled in the best win of her career.

"I'm confident in my game now and every week I've been improving," she said. "That goes back to building momentum which I haven't had in a couple of years. In this match I was spanking returns. She wasn't going to give it to me. At a Grand Slam it's my biggest win."

Li was complimentary towards her opponent. "I was a little bit surprised the way she's hitting on the court," Li said. "Well done for her."

Previous finalist Sam Stosur will take on former world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic in the third round, and the Australian said on the clash: "It's always tough playing Jelena. We played in the semis here in 2010, so we've certainly played enough times on all different surfaces. I'm certainly expecting a tough match, and I have to be ready to work really hard."
