Edmund crashes while Murray gets Mahut rematch

Kyle Edmund failed to join fellow Brit Andy Murray in the second round of the Aegon Championship on a rain-affected day at Queen's Club.

Edmund, 18, won the boy's doubles at last week's French Open and followed it up with an impressive showing against 16th seed Grega Zemlja, but eventually went down 6-4 7-6 (7-4) to the Slovenian.

"I knew it was going to be tough out there but I'm happy with the way I played," Edmund said. "This was my tour debut and it was great to come out and play in these surroundings and hopefully I can do it week in week out."

Murray, meanwhile, will face Nicolas Mahut - the man who knocked him out of this event last year - after the Frenchman eased past American Rhyne Williams 6-3 6-2.

"To play Andy here at Queen's is not a good draw, but last year I played amazing and I won the match," Mahut said. "So I hope this year it's going to be the same but everyone expect shim to win here, to win Wimbledon, so he has a lot of pressure on his shoulders.

"It will be much easier for me to play. This is [Murray's] first match here and first match for a month. I think if he's playing here it means he's feeling 100% but still, it's the first round, especially on grass. I know he had some practice here, but still it's never easy to start a tournament, especially in the grass season."

Third seed Juan Martin del Potro, who missed Roland Garros with illness, was made to work for victory against Xavier Malisse before eventually coming through 7-6 (7-5) 1-6 7-5, while sixth seed Sam Querrey was also given a real test by world No. 78 Aljaz Bedene, but the American won a match which was delayed on three separate occasions to progress to the third round 7-6 (13-11) 5-7 7-6 (7-5).

"It was tough, I've never had so many rain delays in a match before," Querrey, champion here in 2010, noted after the match.

Elsewhere, 12th seed Lukas Rosol recovered from a set down against world No. 232 Sam Groth to progress 6-7 (7-9) 6-3 6-2, while Andrey Kuznetsov, the 14th seed, needed tie breaks in both sets to see off world No. 45 Denis Istomin 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-3).

Felaciano Lopez against Ricardas Berankis was also a three-setter, with the Spaniard progressing 3-6 6-3 6-4, as was the match between Benjamin Becker and Bernard Tomic - the German winning 6-4 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (7-4).

France's Julien Benneteau, the 11th seed, edged compatriot Adrian Mannarino 7-6 (9-7) 6-3, while another Frenchman, ninth seed Benoit Paire, was upset by world No. 116 Denis Kudla 6-3 6-4.

Michael Llodra, ranked 56th, also provided a shock, beating 15th seed Pablo Andujar 6-3 6-1.

In a late finish in South West London, Jarkko Nieminen beat Ryan Harrison 6-3 6-3 and Kenny de Schepper eased past Rajeev Ram 6-3 6-2.
