Roger Federer exacted revenge over Tommy Haas by coming from a set down to reach an eighth final at the Gerry Weber Open.

The Wimbledon champion was defeated in the final at Halle 12 months ago in a tight two-set contest, but Federer ensured he would not lose out to the German for a second year in a row as he fought back from a set down to win 3-6 6-3 6-4.

Federer has not won a title this season and will be out to lift the trophy at Halle for the first time since 2008, but the Swiss faced the prospect of suffering only a sixth loss at the event when he fell a set behind.

However, against the player who has bounced back from being outside the top-200 in the rankings at the start of 2012 after career-threatening injuries, Federer raised his game to get the better of Haas to reach the final.

Following his double bagel success over Mischa Zverev in the quarter-finals, five-time champion Federer signalled his aggressive intent immediately as he fired a forehand down the line and had a break point in the first game.

With a serve into the body of Federer, Haas saved the break point and moved a game in front, and it was the German who clinched the advantage in the fifth game to secure the break.

Haas quickly opened up a three-game lead as he continued to impress on his serve - losing only one point when landing the first ones - and fended off more break-back opportunities for Federer to close out the set 6-3 to finish on 89% of first service points won.

Federer had made far too many errors in the opening set, but the Swiss surged into a 3-0 lead in the second courtesy of forehand and volley winners.

Haas managed to get three games on the board in the set, but was on the end of strong serves from Federer as it was the world No. 3's turn to perform well behind his first serve by winning 13 out of 14 points - and he clinched the set by the same score line to force a decider.

At 30-30 in the second game of the third set, Haas squandered a chance to break and let Federer off the hook. And soon afterwards he was punished for it as Federer broke and went 3-1 in front.

And Haas was unable to get the break back as Federer remained solid on his serve to send the champion packing and reach another final.

Federer will face Mikhail Youzhny in the final after the Russian defeated second seed Richard Gasquet 6-3 6-2 in 58 minutes.
