Edmund topples De Schepper to set up Simon clash

British teenager Kyle Edmund wowed the crowd in Eastbourne with victory over Kenny De Schepper to book his place in the second round of the Aegon International.

The 18-year-old was handed a wildcard into the event and he justified his place in the main draw with a 6-4 6-4 win over the world No. 82.

Edmund, who learned at the weekend that he had been handed a wildcard into the main draw at Wimbledon, put his opponent under pressure from the off.

He powered down four aces and was solid on serve throughout the contest. He did not face a single break point and it enabled him to pile pressure on De Schepper.

And a single break of serve in each set was enough for Edmund to book his place in round two where he will face the no. 2 seed Gilles Simon.

"I have been training hard after the loss at Queen's, really trying to put what I could have done better from that match and make it better," Edmund said. "I have been really focusing on returning. It's just as well [I did] playing the guy I played who's got a big serve. I just had the intent of trying to put a lot of balls into play and go from there. It worked out great. I'm just happy to get the win after being given a wildcard and this great opportunity."

Fernando Verdasco battled from a set down to topple No. 6 seed Alexandr Dolgopolov 1-6 6-3 6-2. He will face Albert Ramos following his 6-2 6-4 win over James Blake.
