Lopez and Vesnina victorious in Eastbourne

Feliciano Lopez edged past second seed Gilles Simon 7-6(2) 6-7(5) 6-0 in the final of the Aegon International as the Spaniard collected his third career title.

Lopez and Simon had to contend with swirling winds in Eastbourne, causing problems for both players on their service games.

But after sharing the opening two sets, Lopez stepped it up a gear in the third to "bagel" his opponent with a series of punishing forehands.

"To be a champion here in Eastbourne and to win the week before Wimbledon is a great feeling," Lopez said. "I was a little injured before coming here so I wasn't even sure I was going to compete - and I've won it. It's impossible to feel better than how I feel now."

Simon will not have to wait long to gain revenge against Lopez - the pair were drawn to play each other in the opening round at Wimbledon.

Earlier in the day, Elena Vesnina clinched her second career title with a 6-2 6-1 win over Jamie Hampton in the women's draw.

Hampton, who battled back to beat Caroline Wozniacki in the semi-finals, had a look at break points in the fifth game - but a sloppy forehand resulted in her passing up a fine chance.

And it was effectively one-way traffic from that moment on as Vesnina broke through shortly afterwards and ran through the rest of the set.

The wind was a real problem, particularly on serve. It troubled Vesnina and she was given a warning at the start of the second set for time wasting. Vesnina held serve and promptly entered into debate with the umpire at the change of ends.

If Vesnina was unsettled, she did not show it and steeled herself to break again at the start of the second set.

Hampton stopped the rot when holding serve in the fourth game of the second set.

Hampton's level improved as the second set developed, but Vesnina clinched the security of a double break and wrapped up the contest on her own serve.

Simona Halep secured a confidence boost ahead of Wimbledon by beating Kirsten Flipkens 6-4 6-2 to take the Topshelf Open title in 's-Hertogenbosch.
