Flawless Murray cruises past Lu

All the talk before Andy Murray's match was persistent declaration that second round opponent Lu Yen-hsun would not be the pushover one might expect the world No. 75 to be for one of the best players of recent years.

Murray has previous with the 29-year-old from Taiwan. The pair met in the first round of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, where Lu triumphed in straight sets against the then world No. 6.

But this time it was Murray who was in front of his home crowd, and there were no such problems as the Scot ran out a 6-3 6-3 7-5 winner.

It did not take long for Murray to arrow a cross-court forehand which Lu could only return into the net and a routine victory was well in motion.

Lu won fewer than half of points on his second serve in the first set, and that is where Murray punished him. A double-fault from the Lu for 15-30 in the opening game of the second set was followed by some fine ball-striking from Murray to set up break point.

Murray smelt blood and shifted through the gears to seal a comfortable second set with further displays of ruthless forehands, expert volleys and those delicious lobs that have become a vital part of Murray's attack.

Lu put up more of a fight in the third set as Murray took his foot off the gas slightly - but the result was never in doubt and the anticipated break came at 6-5 when Lu ended a lengthy rally with a long forehand.

"I thought I kept my concentration well and did well on my serve," Murray said. "Each game I was putting pressure on his serve but he played ultra-aggressive and it was very tough.

"You're trying to get through the matches - you can't guarantee that any match will be easy. You have to do whatever happens to win as quickly as possible."

Talking about the conditions on a remarkable day which has seen seven players withdraw through injury, Murray added: "It's tough to talk about the conditions. I felt comfortable but neither of us slipped. Sometimes you just get unlucky on grass. They can be slick early in the tournament."

Murray will face 32nd seed Tommy Robredo, who beat Nicolas Mahut 7-6(3) 6-1 7-6(5).

"Robredo has started playing some good tennis," Murray said of his next opponent. "He's very fit, he serves solid, has a good forehand and he will fight right until the end."
