Djokovic demolishes Chardy to reach last-16

Even if Jeremy Chardy had a partner with him on court to tackle Novak Djokovic, it still would not have been enough as the world No. 1 played near-flawless tennis to progress to the fourth round at Wimbledon.

The champion from 2011 at times took the breath of the crowd away with some unbelievable shots and returns on Centre Court, and Chardy was unable to do anything to prevent the Serb from reaching the last-16 as Djokovic clinched a 6-3 6-2 6-2 victory to storm into the second week.

Djokovic has yet to be tested at the Championships so far, but Chardy held his own in the early exchanges to keep his opponent at bay.

However, yet to lose a point on his serve, Djokovic secured the break in the eighth game with a fine backhand pass on the run, and with it quickly closed out the opening set - one which he ended by only dropping the solitary point when serving.

For three-quarters of the opening set Chardy gave a good account of himself, but Djokovic continued to ooze class and was in complete command of the contest, breaking for 2-1 and 4-1.

Chardy claimed just a second point behind the Djokovic serve in falling 5-1 behind, and moments after he closed the gap to three games, Djokovic powered to the set at 6-2 to put one foot in the last-16.

The crowd did everything they could to encourage Chardy - once he fell a break behind in the third game of the third set.

With one game to the name of Chardy in the set, Djokovic breezed to a 5-1 lead - and registered his first unforced error of the match via a double fault.

Djokovic squandered one match point on Chardy's serve, but he was not to be denied as he wrapped up the match when Chardy hit the net, and enters the latter stages of the slam yet to lose a set.

Djokovic will face Tommy Haas after the German overcame Feliciano Lopez 4-6 6-2 7-5 6-4. David Ferrer meanwhile battled in five sets against Alexandr Dolgopolov, losing the first set and then trailing two sets to one, but the French Open finalist dug deep to beat the talented Ukrainian 6-7(6) 7-6(2) 2-6 6-1 6-2.

Juan Martin del Potro made it through to the second week of Wimbledon for the third year in a row after the former US Open champion defeated Grega Zemlja 7-5 7-6(3) 6-0, despite crashing into the umpire's chair and clutching his left knee with the trainer called onto Court 12.

Tomas Berdych, runner-up to Rafael Nadal in 2011 and fighting a problem under his right armpit, won the battle of the big-serving giants to get the better of Kevin Anderson, coming from a set down to win 3-6 6-3 6-4 7-5.

Ninth seed Richard Gasquet was sent packing by Bernard Tomic 7-6(7) 5-7 7-5 7-6(5), and Mikhail Youzhny set up an encounter with Andy Murray on Monday after the Halle finalist beat Victor Troicki 6-3 6-4 7-5.
