Federer hits lowest ranking in a decade

Roger Federer has dropped to fifth in the ATP World Tour rankings, his lowest spot in a decade following his shock early exit at Wimbledon.

The 17-time grand slam champion, who has topped the ATP rankings for 302 weeks during his career, slipped out of the top four for the first time since winning Wimbledon in 2003, his maiden major triumph.

Federer, who returned to Wimbledon as defending champion and the No. 3 seed, was knocked out in the second round by Ukraine's Sergiy Stakhovsky and has now slipped behind David Ferrer and Rafael Nadal - also upset in the early rounds - after failing to defend his points from last year's tournament.

Beaten Wimbledon finalist Novak Djokovic remains at the top of the ATP rankings, with champion Andy Murray still second.

And with Ferrer at a career-high third in the standings following his French Open and Wimbledon campaigns and Nadal playing the rest of the season without any points to defend, Federer faces a fight to return to the top four ahead of the US Open.

Federer has added clay events in Hamburg and Gstaad to his tournament schedule ahead of the American hard court season, where he will play two Masters 1000 events - the Rogers Cup in Montreal and the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati - in the build-up to the year's final grand slam.
