Keothavong announces retirement

Anne Keothavong has announced her retirement from tennis.

The former British No. 1 made the announcement via the Lawn Tennis Association's YouTube channel, and will take up a position as a television pundit.

Keothavong, 29, reached a career-high singles ranking of 48 in early 2009, becoming the first British woman in 16 years to break the world's top 50.

Despite serious injuries to both knees Keothavong still carved out a successful career, winning 20 International Tennis Federation singles titles and eight ITF doubles titles, and making seven WTA semi-finals.

Keothavong's grand slam high-point was a third round appearance at the US Open in 2008, and she managed 13 consecutive appearances in the main draw of Wimbledon, reaching the second round on four occasions.

"I've decided to hang up my rackets. It's been a great career for the past 12 years," Keothavong said.

"I've had an amazing life visiting lots of different places, competing in the best tournaments and making lots of friends along the way.

"There are a lot of people I'd like to thank, including my coaches right from the start. There have been quite a few so it's tough to name everyone but they've all played their part.

"To the physios who have helped me through many injuries and the trainers I've worked with along the way, thank you very much.

"And most of all to all the fans who've supported me throughout my career, it's been good fun and greatly appreciated.

"Also I want to give a huge thank you to my family and friends who without their support I wouldn't have been able to do what I've done, especially my mum and dad who have been so supportive and have been there right from the start and supported me through all my decisions and everything I've done.

"I'm excited about the future now. Tennis is what I know best and I'd like to stay involved.

"I feel I can give back a lot to the next generation of British players and stay involved in the game because it's what I know best and love the most, and I couldn't imagine life without it."
