Laura Robson was outclassed 6-1 6-2 by former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in the third round of the Southern California Open.

The British No. 1, who defeated Kvitova at the Australian Open earlier this year, struggled with her serve in the opening set, landing only 41% of her first serve inside the line.

Despite a spirited reply in the second, Robson could not match her third seed opponent as Kvitova broke twice to complete victory in an hour and a quarter on court.

Kvitova will play either Carla Suarez Navarro or Virginie Razzano in the quarter-final.

Elsewhere, fourth seed Robert Vinci saw off American Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-4 6-2 to book her place in the last eight.
