Federer withdraws from Rogers Cup

Roger Federer has pulled out of next week's ATP Masters Rogers Cup in Montreal.

The 17-time grand slam champion gave no official reason for his withdrawal, but it is believed to be due to a back injury which has caused him problems in recent events.

He said earlier this week: "I've had serious problems with the back; I had to get some anti-inflammatories in Hamburg due to the pain.

"I will have to do a lot of exercises and see how it all feels. My main priority now is to fix my back. I would love to be able to train at 100 percent."

In a statement confirming his Montreal withdrawal, he said: "I am disappointed not to be playing in Montreal next week. It is a great tournament with amazing fans. I look forward to competing there in the future."

Federer, now ranked world No. 5, was stunned by No. 55 Daniel Brands last week in his opening match at the Swiss Open, while the week before he was defeated in Hamburg by No. 114 Federico Delbonis.

He fell to No. 116 Sergiy Stakhovsky in the second round at Wimbledon.

Novak Djokovic will defend his Rogers Cup title in Montreal, while Andy Murray returns to action for the first time since beating the Serbian in the Wimbledon final.
