Elena Baltacha and James Ward have fallen at the final hurdle of qualification for the US Open, but there was better news for Dan Evans.

Baltacha lost 4-6 7-5 6-1 to Michelle Larcher De Brito while Ward was beaten 6-3 3-6 6-4 by Somdev Devvarman, the world no. 113.

Baltacha, the British No. 6, had won the first set and was 5-4 up in the second. However Larcher De Brito, the world no. 112, fought back to level the match before easing through the final set.

Ward, ranked 175 in the world, went a set down against Devvarman but won the second and took a 3-1 lead in the decider. But Devvarman battled his way back into the final set and broke Ward in the last game of the match to ensure his place at the US Open.

Evans made it through to the main draw after beating Adrian Menendez-Maceiras 6-7(3) 6-4 6-2, and on qualifying he said: "I'm pretty proud of my efforts, not just here but I've been [in North America] now nearly six weeks, so to lose first round then final, final and to qualify is pretty good."
