Laura Robson will face China's Li Na in the third round of the US Open after her 6-4 7-6 (5) win over fellow 19-year-old Caroline Garcia of France. Robson beat Li Na at the same stage of last year's competition.

An otherwise routine contest was given some edge when Garcia battled back in the second set and forced Robson to save two set points on Court 11. The pair had had to sit and watch the rain fall for four hours before they were finally able to start.

Robson's main worry continued to be her right wrist which limited her pre-tournament preparations. She called a medical time-out after the first set to have the wrist re-taped and to take some painkillers. "I just felt like I needed some more tape on my wrist, that's all we did," she said. "It's fine. I'm going to get treatment on it and get it ready for Friday.

"I thought I played really well and I served really well, and I'm looking forward to the next round," Robson told the BBC.

Asked about her own impressive serving, Robson said: "That's what I work on in practice and that's basically how I serve in practice, so it's nice to finally have that transfer to the match court for once."
