Evans storms into US Open third round

You might be forgiven thinking British men's tennis was just about Andy Murray, but Daniel Evans, ranked three in Great Britain, is causing people to take notice as he moved into the third round of the US Open with a four-set victory over Australia's Bernard Tomic. Evans, ranked 179 in the world, won 1-6 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 and will now face 19th seed Tommy Robredo of Spain.

"It was pleasing I could find some belief inside and come back and find my game, because it wasn't there," he said. "I looked at the clock, I think it was 34 minutes, I was a set and a break down. It was looking like the airport for me. So, yeah, it was good."

After losing the first set in 22 minutes Evans bounced back from an early break in the second to level the match as his confidence visibly grew. He took the third on a tie-break after the pair had swapped breaks early on in the set.

A brief break while he had to have his nipples taped seemed to upset his concentration as he immediately dropped serve at the start of the fourth. "Oh, the stick I'm going to get back home is, like, devastating," Evans admitted. "I don't know what it was. It was just agony." But with Tomic looking increasing ill at ease, Evans stormed through to victory.

"I played well today, but I missed quite a lot," he said. "I didn't serve great I don't think. I served pretty decent at times when I needed to. In the last match, I was really clinical. I could have been a bit more clinical today. That may be a bit harsh, I just won against Tomic."

He said that a snub by Tomic's father, who is banned from the ATP tour because of assault charges in Spain, helped spur him on. "I was there playing quallies. His dad sort of fobbed me off and said I wasn't good enough to practice with him. I remembered that. We went to practice. It was all booked. In Miami, there's a little practice hut. I got to the practice hut. His dad said, 'No, no. He's a qualifier, I'm not hitting with you'. So, it was one of those. A bit embarrassing, but hey."
