Robson marches on in Guangzhou
Laura Robson will be joined by fellow Briton Johanna Konta in the quarter-finals of the Guangzhou Open, but defending champion Su-Wei Hsieh crashed out in the second round.
Robson, who lost to Hsieh in last year's final, was made to earn her first quarter-final berth of 2013 during her 6-3 7-6(4) victory over Chinese wild-card Saisai Zheng, which ended seconds shy of two hours.
Robson will face world No. 58 Jie Zheng in the last eight after the 30-year-old edged out Timea Babos 7-5 7-6(1).
Konta's strong run in Guangzhou continued with a 6-1 6-3 victory over No. 4 seed Shuai Peng. The 22-year-old, who reached the main draw through qualifying, faces Shuai Zhang in her first WTA tournament quarter-final appearance.
Zhang progressed with a 6-2 6-2 demolition of Hsieh in the second round, ensuring that a qualifier is destined to reach the semi-finals at the Chinese event. Fellow qualifier Vania King of the United States bounced back from a second-set wobble to beat Bojana Jovanovski 6-4 0-6 6-4.
Second seed Alize Cornet broke the resistance of Karolina Pliskova in the first set tie-break to run out a 7-6(4) 6-0 winner, while Puerto Rico's Monica Puig booked her spot in the last eight with a 6-3 6-2 win over Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan.
