Serena Williams looked in good form as she completed a safe passage into the second round with a 7-6(2) 6-2 win over Switzerland's Stefanie Voegele.

The No. 1 seed, who won her 12th Grand Slam title at the Australian Open earlier this year, was forced to work hard to remain in the first as she recovered from an early break but always had the extra power needed to grind out some tough points. After winning the first set on a tiebreak, the American upped the pace and broke her opponent twice in the second as she progressed to a second-round encounter with Germany's Julia Goerges, who overcame Melinda Czink 6-3 6-2.

Caroline Wozniacki got her French Open campaign off to a blistering start as she steamrolled Alla Kudryavtseva 6-0 6-3.

Wozniacki has been struggling with an ankle injury and had managed just three victories in her last seven matches, but she showed no signs of difficulty of movement as she powered to victory. The third seed was ruthless in the opener as she bagelled the world No. 78 in less than half an hour on Court Philippe Chatrier.

The Russian put up a bit of resistance in the second and finally held serve early in the second set to level the scores at 1-1, and she grabbed her chance to break Wozniacki for a 2-1 lead. It was a wake-up call for Wozniacki, who broke straight back, and although Wozniacki was not as dominant in the second set , the Dane wrapped up a comfortable victory.

She has never made it past the third round at Roland Garros, where the No. 3 seed will now meet Tathiana Garbin, who came from behind to beat Kristina Barrois 1-6 7-6(7) 6-3.

Elena Baltacha's hopes of reaching the second round are over after she tumbled to a 6-0 7-5 defeat against No. 8 seed Agnieszka Radwanska. The Briton struggled to have any influence on the game in a brutally one-sided affair but recovered some pride with an improved showing in the second set.

Elena Dementieva eased into the second round with a 6-1 6-1 victory over Petra Martic. The No. 5 seed has been struggling for form on recent weeks, having failed to progress past the second round of her four previous tournaments, but will take a great deal of confidence from a dominant display on Court 2. The Russian will now meet Anabel Medina Garrigues in round two after the Spaniard beat Melanie Oudin 7-5 6-2.

Ana Ivanovic began her campaign with a comfortable 6-3 6-3 win over Kai-Chen Chang, while No. 4 seed Jelena Jankovic dropped just four games as she disposed of Australia's Alicia Molik.

Na Li was given a tough test against French wildcard Kristina Mladenovic but eventually progressed 7-5 6-3. Ranked No. 211 in the world, Mladenovic showed impressive grit to force the No. 11 seed into hitting 24 unforced errors. Li struggled to settle into a rhythm but was able to capitalise on the 17-year-old's shaky service game to move into round two.

No. 7 seed Samantha Stosur progressed with a routine 7-5 6-1 win over Simona Halep, while Aleksandra Wozniak and Arantxa Parra Santonja enjoyed similarly comfortable routes to the next round.

Romania's Alexandra Dulgheru had to work harder for her place in the second round, battling past Lucie Hradecka 7-6(1) 4- 6-3. Italian Francesca Schiavone also needed three sets to continue her campaign, beating Regina Kulikova 5-7 6-3 6-4.

Magdalena Rybarikova came out on top in one of the day's most entertaining matches. The Slovakian sent some slick groundstrokes past her Swedish opponent Sofia Arvidsson as she worked her way to a 6-7(2) 6-2 6-3 victory. Kateryna Bondarenko will take on Rybarikova in the next round after she made light work of Julie Coin.

Fellow Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko responded superbly to losing the first set to wrap up a 6-7(3) 6-3 6-4 success over the dangerous Vera Dushevina. Julia Goerges completed her progress in much simpler style, taking out Melinda Czink 6-2 6-3.

Elsewhere in the first round, there were wins for Roberta Vinci, Kaia Kanepi, Sophie Ferguson, Tathiana Garbin, Timea Bacsinszky, Yaroslava Shvedova, Rossana De Los Rios and Stephanie Cohen-Aloro.
