The Australian Open is set to become the third richest grand slam after Tennis Australia announced an increase in prize money by £1.7 million, taking the total prize fund to £19.1m.

The opening major on the tennis calendar is now behind Wimbledon and the US Open, and Tennis Australian chief executive Craig Tiley commented: "We said it last year and we still believe it, these incredible athletes deserve every cent and we will continue to do everything in our power to make the life of an international professional tennis player more worthwhile.

"The slams have led the way, but the entire tennis fraternity still isn't there yet."
