Serena Williams has been in a league of her own over the last couple of years, but many inside the National Tennis Stadium were applauding the brave effort of her opponent Caroline Wozniacki at the China Open.

The reigning French and US Open champion was producing a devastating display as Wozniacki was like a boxer on the ropes, taking plenty of heavy blows and not having an answer to the powerful hits that were coming towards her.

But in the past where Williams' opponents have been blown away, Wozniacki showed the fighting spirit that propelled her to the top of the world rankings. However, the resistance of the Dane was undone as Williams clinched a spot in the semi-finals of the tournament with a 6-1 6-4 victory. And even Williams was full of praise for Wozniacki as the pair embraced and congratulated one another at the net.

Win number 71 of the year looked as though it was going to be one of the more quicker ones for Williams, but after witnessing 17 winners fly past her in the opening set in going down 6-1, Wozniacki from 4-0 down in the second gave something for her opponent to consider by forcing Williams to serve for the match at 5-4.

With new balls in her hand though, Williams would not be denied a last-four spot as she flashed a forehand beyond her opponent to finally end the comeback of Wozniacki.

Former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova got the better of home favourite Li Na in a tense encounter, coming from a set down to win 4-6 6-2 6-4. Jelena Jankovic also booked her spot in the semi-finals with a hard-fought 6-7(3) 6-4 6-4 victory over Lucie Safarova. Third seed Agnieszka Radwanska continued her run with a 7-6(7) 6-4 win over Angelique Kerber to fill the remaining semi-final spot.
