Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from next week's Swiss Indoors Basel, with ambitions of winning a maiden ATP World Tour Finals crown likely to be behind the decision.

The world No. 1 has had a remarkable season after making his return in February following seven months on the sidelines with a knee problem. The Spaniard has lifted the French and US Opens and eight other trophies, including five Masters titles as well as overtaking Novak Djokovic and returning to top spot in the rankings.

And he posted on Facebook: "Hi all, sorry to announce that I won't travel to Basel in Switzerland but after very exhausting weeks I have to regroup my fitness and my body. I will do my best to come back to the Swiss Indoors next year."

With the final Masters event of the season taking place in Paris at the end of October, Nadal will be focusing on that as well as the World Tour Finals on November 4.

Nadal is aiming to triumph at the season-finale at London's O2 Arena for the first time having qualified for the ninth straight year. He was a runner-up to Roger Federer in 2010.
