Roger Federer continued his fight to reach the ATP World Tour Finals with 4-6 6-3 6-2 win over Denis Istomin at the Swiss Indoors on Wednesday.

Federer will qualify for the finals, which take place at London's O2 Arena in November, if he picks up his sixth title in Basel.

The Swiss had to recover from a slow start against Istomin, but won the last five games of the deciding set to book his place in the quarter-final.

Elsewhere, top seed and defending champion Juan Martin Del Potro overcame wildcard Henri Laaksonen 6-4 6-4 in less than one hour 20 minutes on court.

Michael Llodra produced a first round upset as the Frenchman ousted fifth seed Richard Gasquet in straight sets, winning through to the second round 6-4 6-2 to aid Federer's road to the O2.

Vasek Pospisil defeated Robin Haase 6-4 6-4 while Paul-Henri Mathieu was victorious in the battle of the qualifiers with his 6-4 7-5 win over Denis Kudla.

Meanwhile, top seed David Ferrer enjoyed a winning start in the first round of the Valencia Open 500. The Spaniard saw off Gael Monfils 6-3 6-2 in little over an hour.

Also in Spain, there were wins for Fabio Fognini, Jeremy Chardy, John Isner and Philipp Kohlschreiber, who all advanced to the second round.
