Spanish duo stun Bryan brothers
Fernando Verdasco and David Marrero became only the third Spanish doubles team to win the ATP World Tour Finals after they stunned Bob and Mike Bryan at the O2.
The duo were making their debuts at the season-finale, and have denied the top-ranked team a fourth triumph following a 7-5 6-7(3) 10-7 victory after an hour and 44 minutes.
After saving a set point, Verdasco and Marrero broke to move into a 6-5 lead, before holding serve to take the advantage against the Americans.
With the pairs unable to convert any of five break point opportunities between them in the second set, a tiebreak was required, and it was one where a wild forehand from Verdasco handed the mini-break to the Bryans, who raced into a 4-1 lead and then dropped just two points after to level the contest.
So a race to 10 would decide the outcome of the final, and Marrero got the Spaniards off to the perfect start by flashing a fine forehand winner past the duo to secure the mini-break, which they maintained right up until 8-7.
And at that point it was Verdasco who clinched the second mini-break to set up championship point at 9-7 with a superb forehand winner, with the experienced professional closing out victory on his serve.
