Murray to be given freedom of Stirling in April

Wimbledon champion Andy Murray is set to be given the freedom of the city of Stirling in April 2014, according to his mother Judy.

Murray became the first British man in 77 years to lift the Wimbledon trophy at SW19 after defeating Novak Djokovic in the final, but after his maiden grand slam triumph at the 2012 US Open and his Olympic gold medal at London 2012, the British No. 1 was granted the honour by officials of the city.

However, having yet to receive it, Judy Murray says her son, who trained as a youngster in Stirling at the Gannochy National Tennis Centre, will officially receive the honour after there were delays following his back surgery in September, which ruled him out for the rest of the 2013 campaign.

"He was given the freedom of the city and, yes, he has to collect that," Judy is quoted as saying by the BBC.

"Unfortunately he was laid up for a few months with back surgery then rehab on the injury, which meant he couldn't travel and had to stay close to physios and doctors, and then his rehab ran into the off-season. So it's all scheduled for April time now, which will be great."
