Williams wins AP Female Athlete of the Year award

For the third time in her career, Serena Williams has been named the Associated Press 2013 Female Athlete of the Year.

The American has enjoyed her best season of her career to date, winning the French and US Opens, the WTA Championships, and collecting a total of 11 titles in earning more than $12 million in prize money.

In February, she also returned to top spot in the world rankings to become the oldest player to be world No. 1 at the age of 31.

And thanks to her triumph at the US Open over Victoria Azarenka, Williams moved onto 17 grand slams and trails leader Steffi Graf by five majors on 22. Williams also compiled a 34-match unbeaten streak in winning 78 matches during 2013, and losing just four.

It is the third time that Williams has been named AP's Female Athlete of the Year, and is just the third women's tennis player to win the award three times or more, with Maureen Connolly on three and Chris Evert on four.
