Heather Watson has booked her place in the first round of the Brisbane International after beating Jarmila Gajdosova 6-4 6-4.

The British No. 3 reached a career-high 39th in the world rankings last February, but a combination of poor form and suffering glandular fever now sees her ranked at No. 133.

But after breaking her opponent six times throughout the match, Watson qualified in straight sets to reach the main stages of the tournament.

Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki made it through to the second round with a 6-3 6-4 over Magdalena Rybarikova, while former top 10 player Andrea Petkovic has a second round date with world No. 1 Serena Williams after the German beat Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-4 7-5.
