Berdych crashes out of Qatar Open

Tomas Berdych started the new season by crashing out of the Qatar Open courtesy of a 7-6(6) 7-6(4) defeat to Ivo Karlovic.

In a match which saw neither player break serve, Karlovic sent down 25 aces and hit 49 winners, while world No. 7 Berdych managed eight aces and 28 winners.

Elsewhere, Gael Monfils sealed a comfortable win against Santiago Giraldo. The Frenchman took the first set tie-break 7/1 and then won the second set 6-2.

Fernando Verdasco saw off Filippo Volandri 6-3 6-3 in just over an hour, while Lukasz Kubot moved into the second round by beating Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-4 6-3.
