Sharapova makes winning return, Williams into quarter-finals
Maria Sharapova stormed into the second round of the Brisbane International after a 6-3 6-0 win over Caroline Garcia, as she marked her return from injury with a dominant victory.
The four-time grand slam champion last played competitively in August after missing four-and-a-half months with a shoulder problem, and she showed no signs of rustiness after only dropping three games en route to the next round.
"I think I was just really determined to get back on the court. It's been a while," Sharapova said.
"I think the whole team was really ready to go out. I knew I was going to play Monday night a little bit ago already. I got goosebumps when I heard because I was looking forward to today even a week ago. It's those days you work for. It was a big step to come and a big step to play out there tonight."
World No. 1 Serena Williams kicked off her new campaign with a 6-4 6-4 win over Andrea Petkovic. Williams, the reigning champion, was not quite at her best, but was still too strong for the former top 10 player, and is through to the quarter-finals.
It was an intense match, which was really good," Williams said. "She's been in the top 10 before and she was on her way to being even better. It was a good match for me."
