Roger Federer was victorious in the doubles with partner Nicolas Mahut as the pair beat top seeds Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau to reach the quarter-finals of the Brisbane International.

And Federer, making his debut in the event Down Under, was also sporting a new larger racquet head, one that he has been practicing with during the off-season in Dubai and is set to use for the new campaign.

Federer experimented with a 98-inch racquet head during the summer last year in a bid to find some form. However, the record 17-time grand slam champion only played with it for five matches, before returning to his regular 90-inch frame. Now, he has a win under his belt with the new model.

And with his childhood hero and legend of the game Stefan Edberg now a part of his coaching team, Federer is up-and-running for the new season after he and Mahut won 7-5 7-6(5).

Federer is set to get his singles' campaign underway against Jarkko Nieminen on Wednesday.
