Laura Robson is a major doubt for the Australian Open after the British No. 1 retired from her first round encounter against Yani Wickmayer at the Hobart International due to injury.

Robson was forced to miss the ASB Classic in Auckland last week following a wrist problem, and taking part in her first event of the season won the opening set 6-4. However, after conceding a break to her opponent, she pulled out of the encounter, and is facing a fitness battle to be ready for the opening grand slam of the year at the Australian Open, which begins on January 13.

Top seed and home favourite Sam Stosur recovered from losing the first set 7-6(4) to Madison Brengle, with the former US Open champion fighting back to claim the next two sets 6-1 7-6(5).

Meanwhile, at the Sydney International, fourth seed Jelena Jankovic lost to Ekaterina Makarova 6-4 6-2, while former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki came from a set down to beat Julia Goerges 3-6 6-2 6-4.
