Andy Murray made it one step closer to Grand Slam glory as he saw off France's Marc Gicquel in straight sets. The world No.5 took an hour and 50 minutes to beat the world No.57 6-1 6-4 6-3.
After breezing through the first set in 23 minutes, Murray came up against stiffer opposition in the second. Murray looked to start the where he left off, breaking Gicquel's opening service game to take a 2-0 lead but it was not plain sailing as he was forced to save three break points in the set to go 4-2 up.
Gicquel got even tougher in the third set, breaking Murray's serve for the first time in the match to level the scores at 3-3. However, Murray broke straight back to remain in control of the match, and did not lose another game as he sealed the match inside two hours.
"It was a good performance," Murray said. "Condititions were quite tricky as it was quite windy and there were a couple of tough games. It was a great atmosphere in the arena, a bit like the Davis Cup with a lot of noise between points."
Murray will now face France's Florent Serra, who came through an epic five setter with Jarkko Nieminen 3-6 6-4 5-7 7-6(4) 7-5.
