  • Stanislas Wawrinka's Australian Open triumph proved to everyone - himself included - that he has the physical ability to match the world's very best, but perhaps even more importantly he showed the mental fortitude to go with it as well, writes Chris Wilkinson.

An official with TAB Sportsbet, Australia's largest bookmaker, told ESPN that they will pay out AUS$225,000 (£119,000) for a $500 bet one of their clients made for both Stanislas Wawrinka and Li Na to win the title.

TAB spokesman Matt Jenkins said that the bet was placed on January 16 when the odds of both winning the Australian Open were 451/1.

Wawrinka, the No. 8 seed, beat the top two seeds, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, to win his first grand slam title on Sunday. Li, seeded fourth in the women's draw, had an easier road, not having to beat any player seeded inside the top 20.

Jenkins said the bet was placed at one of the company's 2,900 outlets throughout the country, but that TAB Sportsbet does not know the person's identity since it was bet on with cash.
