World No. 1 Rafael Nadal will not be forced to miss events as a result of the back injury he sustained in the Australian Open final loss to Stanislas Wawrinka.

Nadal was beaten in four sets on Sunday, but midway through the match struggled with back problems, and received extensive treatment for the injury which hampered his movement and serve during the defeat to Wawrinka.

But after returning to Spain to undergo tests, the injury is not serious as first feared, and a statement issued from the Nadal camp said: "He has undergone an extensive round of anti-inflammatory medical treatment as well as intensive physiotherapy. Next Monday he will have further tests to evaluate the progress of his recovery and to see if he can gradually start training again."

Nadal is due to play at Buenos Aires on February 10, before heading to Rio de Janeiro, with the first Masters 1000 event beginning in Indian Wells on March 6.
