Murray raises fitness concerns ahead of Davis Cup tie

Andy Murray does not know whether he will be able to play all three days of Great Britain's Davis Cup tie against the USA, which begins on Friday in San Diego.

Great Britain will compete in the elite World Group of the competition for the first time since 2008 after beating Croatia in a play-off in September, and shortly after that triumph Murray underwent surgery on his back which ruled him out for the rest of the 2013 campaign.

After the reigning Wimbledon champion made his return to action on Boxing Day at the Mubadala World Tennis Championships in Abu Dhabi, Murray has since played in two competitive events following surgery, losing in Doha and being defeated by Roger Federer in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open.

And Great Britain will be turning to their No. 1 player to get their Davis Cup campaign up-and-running against the USA.

However, Murray has raised doubts over his fitness, and is still unsure whether he will participate in the doubles rubber on Saturday.

"It's a possibility I can play in all three rubbers. I haven't played on clay since I had the operation so I don't know how I will feel until after the first match," Murray said.

"Every day and every week, it is a process. I have only played two tournaments since what was serious surgery so if I am fit and healthy I will put my name in and play. But if I was to play a five-set match on the first day I don't know if I would be able to play all three days so we will have to wait and see how I feel. Right now I feel good."

Murray would potentially play doubles with fellow Scot Colin Fleming, and captain Leon Smith is set to finalise his team before the draw at 8pm on Thursday.

In the singles, meanwhile, Murray will now face Donald Young in Friday's opening match after big-serving John Isner pulled out with injury.
