Murray: Great Britain can lift Davis Cup

Andy Murray believes Great Britain can go on and win the Davis Cup following their first victory over the US in the competition since 1935.

On Sunday, Murray defeated Sam Querrey in four sets to book a quarter-final tie with Italy, the first time Great Britain have reached that stage since 1986.

The Scot secured the crucial point in San Diego which will see Great Britain travel to Italy in April. When asked post-victory about the team's chances of winning the final November, Murray was optimistic.

"It's obviously a goal," Murray said. "This is the first time I've been involved when we've had a chance of winning the competition. It's obviously going to be extremely tough but we have a great team spirit, we've won a lot over the last few years, hopefully we can keep it going.

"It was a whole team effort. James [Ward] had a huge win on Friday. It's been a long time since we've been here, even though we had Tim [Henman] and Greg [Rusedski] before who were top ten in the world.

"It's not easy to win matches in the world group, especially away from home against a very experienced team like the US."
