Murray to continue comeback as Rotterdam wildcard

Andy Murray has been handed a wildcard to the ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam, which suggests he is in decent shape following back surgery last year.

The reigning Wimbledon champion had an operation on the problem last September, which ruled him out of the major events for the rest of 2013.

Having made his comeback on Boxing Day at an exhibition event in Abu Dhabi, Murray has since played in Doha and the Australian Open, and last week guided Great Britain into the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup after a victory over USA in San Diego.

Murray is due to play in Acapulco later in February, before heading off for the first Masters 1000 events of the season in Indian Wells and Miami.

But the British No. 1 will be competing in Rotterdam, which begins on February 10, alongside the likes of Juan Martin del Potro and Tomas Berdych.

And tournament director Richard Krajicek, a champion at Wimbledon in 1996, said: "Last week I contacted Andy Murray and his management.

"Because he didn't have a tournament planned between Australian Open and Acapulco and came back from Australia free from physical issues, it seemed like a good idea to both of us if he came to Rotterdam.

"After consultation with his coach Ivan Lendl he decided. Obviously this is a great addition to our already very strong field. [It's] an excellent opportunity."

Meanwhile, world No. 1 Rafael Nadal will not be playing in Buenos Aires, as a stomach virus had delayed his plans to recover from the back injury he sustained in the Australian Open final loss to Stanislas Wawrinka.
