Heather Watson secured an impressive 6-7(7) 6-1 6-4 win over Sorana Cirstea in Budapest but it was not enough to stop Romania from beating Great Britain 2-1 to reach the Fed Cup World Group II play-offs.

Britain led the best of three tie following Watson's win, but Simona Halep's 6-1 6-4 victory over Johanna Konta levelled the tie.

Irina-Camelia Begu and Monica Niculescu then beat Watson and Jocelyn Rae in the doubles. The victory gives Romania a commanding lead in Pool B.

The winners of each of the four pools will play another one to determine the two teams who will go on to the World Group II play-offs in April.

Britain's hopes are not over, though they will have to beat hosts Hungary as well as hoping Romania lose to Latvia and that the game average goes their way.

"It was an exciting match," Watson said. "She played great on the set points but I took charge of rallies after and that's what I'm most pleased with."
