Andy Murray says he is finally starting to feel "normal after getting through the hardest period of his recovery from back surgery.

The reigning Wimbledon champion went under the knife last September to repair the problems he had been suffering throughout 2013 and only returned to action on Boxing Day at an exhibition event in Abu Dhabi.

"It takes time," Murray said before the first Masters 1000 tournament of the new season at Indian Wells. "The last couple of weeks I've really started to feel normal. I'm not saying it's ahead of schedule but I'd say it's pretty much on schedule.

On the long road back to full fitness, Murray has reached the semi-finals of Acapulco, last weekend, and made the quarter-finals at the Australian Open and Rotterdam.

"I wasn't expecting to feel perfect in January but as an athlete it can be frustrating when you're trying to come back to play your best," he said. "You're just not quite there no matter how much training and physical work, all those things that you do.

"I'm looking forward to hopefully playing some good tennis over the next month. I'm starting to move well again and feel comfortable in my movement."
